Dream Entry*
September 17, 2005
I had the peanut butter cookie dream again. Sometimes in the dream the peanut butter cookie is big, sometimes it’s regular-sized, but it’s always chasing me and I’m always scared. This time it’s as big as a ferris wheel. It’s wearing a monocle over its single chocolate chip eye. The eye blinks. I dodge the giant cookie crumbs that fall to the ground.
There’s something new about the peanut butter cookie this time. It speaks.
“Yellow boots make the best goldfish receptacles,” it says.
In my dream I understand that to be a threat. I start to run away. I’m outside. There are staircases everywhere. Even though I run down the stairs, I go up. At first I can move quickly, but the steps are covered in tape and honey and my feet get stuck. When I reach cleaner steps, my legs suddenly feel heavy. I can hear the peanut butter cookie panting behind me.
Down, down I go, getting higher and higher until I end up on the roof of the library. The library is taller than it is in real life, stories and stories high. I look down and see all my friends far below. They’re shouting at me, and pointing, warning me about the peanut butter cookie.
I turn to face the peanut butter cookie. As always, I contemplate trying to eat it. It’s big—not so big as a ferris wheel now, more like a tractor wheel. Maybe if I ate fast enough I could finish it off before it gets me. It rolls closer, its chocolate chip eye watching me as it revolves around the cookie’s edge. I step back onto nothing. I fall up, up, up until I land on the ground below.
It’s a soft landing. All my friends, some puppies, and a duck have piled up books to cushion my landing. Even the hardcovers feel like pillows.
I look to the roof just as the peanut butter cookie bounces off it. When it lands on the ground next to us, it breaks into thousands of regular peanut butter cookies. We have a feast, and read.

Great books here! I'm reading Spectral by Shannon Duffy and Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa. Both are great.
Thanks for sharing those titles, Kelly!
